Archival pigment print Each print individually hand colored Edition of 6 Sally Stockhold © 2009 Gertrude Stein 1874 - 1946 Alice b. Toklas 1877 - 1967 Gertrude Stein and Alice B.Toklas, American expats living in Paris, became partners in 1907. Their deeply loving relationship lasted for 40 years, until Gertrude’s death. Gertrude, a wealthy modernist writer, collected paintings by Picasso, Matisse and many other great painters of the time. With Alice, Gertrude established a haven in their Paris apartment for creative people to come, dine, and share great conversation. The only requirement to be invited back to the salon was that one had to have been an interesting guest. Gertrude wrote through the night after guests had left. Alice tended to everything else and became famous in her own right when she published “The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook.”
