CHARLES JAMES “CHICK” HAFEY was born in Berkeley California on February 12, 1903 and signed as a pitcher by the St. Louis Cardinals straight out of Berkeley High. My work started with a b&w picture of Hafey, the man with “the rifle arm” and one of two Hall of Famers who wore glasses. Of no importance: the Cardinals were first The Cleveland Spiders, then the St. Louis Perfectos, and finally the Cardinals. Why?
